Spontaneosity

(I am aware that that is not an actual word. It sounds cooler than spontaneity. I seem to like making up words.)

Let's get this straight that this is not a picture of the day. It's just a thought. With pictures.

Taken:
Puddle, Rain, and Roof
Powershot SD1100IS Hand-held, no fancy remotes
... No flash
Handheld
4-5 exposures

For those of you who don't get it, it's a parody of Frank Wang's water pictures. Here's his take on water pictures:

Hah. Significantly better, right? Sort of like Albert (& Albert)'s post, the difference is camera. But not only: it is also the professionalism as well as the topic of this post, "spontaneosity".

Frank had to take 800 pictures in a controlled environment using milk, water, and detergent to get those pictures. I'm not saying that they're bad in any way. Quite the contrary: they're amazing pictures. But controlling things like this may sometimes be annoying.

I, on the other hand, was waiting to cross the street when a flash rainstorm appeared. drops started falling from the roof into a puddle. I noticed this and decided to take a few pictures. 5 later, I was able to get that splash. Never mind the fact that I don't have the full splash, or that there's no principles of art applied there, or that it's a really, really crappy picture. A spur of the moment idea got me that picture that I am fairly proud of.

Hanging out with Alex, Michelle, Robin, and Kevin these past few days in Taiwan really got me thinking about surprises and spontaneity. As we were walking, I tried to catch everything cool or funny on camera. But when I would least expect it, Alex would... jump off something like Mario, giving me too little time to pull my camera out. It was funny, but I couldn't make him emulate it again because then, it wouldn't be as surprising or even funny. Or Robin would always almost trip due to rain, but tripping is so sudden it is nearly impossible to catch on camera. So my photos are simply things that I found funny that was static, so ones not including my friends, or just regular pictures of them. I can't set up Alex's random actions, nor can I set up Robin's tripping (or maybe I can).

The fact is that hanging out with these people gave me great memories, but not quite pictures. I was counting on the pictures to evoke my memories when I look back at them, but I figure if I do that, those memories were not memorable enough to be remembered. So, thanks for the spontaneous times, guys.
